Microsoft President Brad Smith Asserts Human Control Over Artificial Intelligence is Essential

Microsoft has joined forces with OpenAI, a company backed by Elon Musk, to advance artificial intelligence. In doing so, Microsoft is challenging other major tech players such as Google and Meta Platforms. This positions Brad Smith, the company’s president, as an ideal spokesperson to address the global debate surrounding AI’s immense capacity for both positive and negative impacts on humanity.

Speaking at the B20 Summit India 2023 in New Delhi, Microsoft President Brad Smith on Friday stressed the need for “real clarity” on the goals and principles of AI regulation. He made his company’s position clear, calling for a “regulatory plan” that requires action at the private, national and global levels.

People want to trust that this new technology, artificial intelligence, will remain under human control, he said.

“They’ve seen too many science fiction movies that turned out to be the opposite. And when we create something that feels like science fiction, we need companies and regulators to focus on that,” Smith said.

Speaking at the session “AI for Business and Societies: Opportunities and Regulations,” Smith, who is also Microsoft’s vice president, emphasized the need for a regulatory blueprint by governments and the private sector around the world.

“It means that some of these principles are applied at the application level, some at the model level and some at the cloud or data center level,” PTI quoted him as saying.

This plan must be implemented in part by ensuring that companies using AI know who their customers are and how it is being used.

“That means focusing on knowing what cloud it’s on and focusing on knowing the content that’s being created and especially if it’s being created by AI,” he said.
